Pearls do go with jeans?

Freshwater pearl brooch Letters by Catherine Zibo

First, no suspense: yes, they do.

Second, they go with jeans, dresses, pajamas, no matter what, – as somebody said, a pearl is a gemstone that is the closest to human. So if you have acquired ideas about pearls as a “grandma strand”, “royalty jewel” or “maharaja style”, it’s time to get things straight!

(I have been there before. I have first used pearls during my graduation project in school, and even then, it was a little, very unusual, naturally pink freshwater keshi pearl located in such a way that it appeared as some kind of fantastic tool in the porcelain doll’s hand… I don’t like jewelry that yells obvious luxury, so I fervently rejected those posh “simple white Mikimoto strands” or “glamorous Tahiti black pearls”)

While scientific aspects of pearls, their cultivation and treatment, are sure cool and interesting, let’s stay with the theme. Let perfect round pearls aside for royal weddings or corporate holidays (joking – they can also have a place in everyday life) and let’s see what pearls go with jeans, actually.

NOT QUITE ROUND PEARL

Already, round shape is not “normal” for a pearl. In nature pearls usually are found in all kinds of asymmetric shapes. (Yes, pretty much all contemporary pearls on the jewelry market are cultivated with the help of humans).

To avoid “looking matronly”, as someone wittingly said, but not necessarily pick a way-too-bold statement piece, go for these:

SEED pearls are very tiny, looking more like seed beads. They are great for casual wear, not so obviously identified as pearls from a normal distance, but delicate and lovely. Caution: a seed pearl necklace might be expensive because all these pearls are drilled by hand, and there are dozens of these on a single strand!

RICE pearls can be almost-round, oval, or pear (drop) shaped. These elongated pearls are more classic if worn as earrings or a pendant, and more playful if made into a short necklace. For more fun, look for what the jewellers call “cerclé” – pearls with a sort of natural circular engraving which is a trace of mollusk’s muscles.

POTATO (yes, food terminology is strong here) are basically rice pearls drilled in perpendicular direction. Look like potatoes. Often the first choice for a man who starts wearing pearls.

PETAL is thin, textured pearl often drilled through the tip in a way that allows strung pearls to lie in random directions, imitating some of the real flowers.

BAROQUE pearls are basically pearls that don’t have an axe of symmetry. Ranging from organic-shaped potatoes or rice to the most incredible natural shapes inviting pareidolia in. (Hearts? Cat heads? Birds? I have encountered roasted chicken, shrooms, pants, skulls and even, ehm, penises.) Such trendy, highly organic-shaped pearls also include fireballs that look like fireballs, and keshi which are highly asymmetric, often very textural and also often with beautiful luster.

PREFORMED NUCLEUS can make pearls look like stars, suns, moons, squares, fish, big flat coins and anything else geometric or figurative. In this case nacre is hiding a shell nucleus pre-shaped by machine. No, no mussel can make a strand of those Little Mermaid five-ray stars!

More to come, stay tuned!
